I found a studio nearby and went to my 1st class on Monday night. The focus was on Iyengar Yoga. This type focuses on improving posture and alignment. The class size was fairly large. I'm not sure if I liked being in a crowded class, but I enjoyed the variety of people. Some my age, some in college, a few guys...it was fun.
Wednesday I went to Yoga 1 for beginners to see if I liked that one better. The basic yoga was focused on the standing poses: stretching/strengthening legs, back and shoulders. Problem with the daytime class...older group. So, there were a lot of modified poses. I admit...my hamstrings are so tight...I need some of the modified poses. Plus, being surrounded by older people made me feel young and cocky...almost made me want to say, "Hey, look at what I can do without fear of breaking a hip". Kidding aside, it was a great class. The instructor balanced every one's abilities and was very encouraging to everyone.
They only thing I didn't expect was the "ailment competition". I have scoliosis....nothing major...I'm not a hunchback...doctors usually don't even notice and I haven't had any pain since my teen years...but it is there. In one pose, the instructor came to help me and said, "oh, you have a touch of scoliosis". Then the woman next to me said, "I used to have that." Then went on and on about her hip and walking funny. I just smiled, because she had no idea what scoliosis was, but had to win the ailment battle I didn't even know I was competing in.
There are a few more variations that I want to try, but I think I'm sold on the center and the instructors.
